How the defensive vs position filter has changed the game for the NBA and NFL

In partnership with

Defense vs Position in the NFL, NBA

This year, we’ve added the defense vs. position filter to both the NBA and NFL, and the feedback from you, the community, has been extremely positive. We wanted to take today’s newsletter to highlight how it has changed the game on Props.Cash, and how you can utilize it for today’s NBA slate and Thursday Night Football.

To showcase how the filter can be utilized to find value night in and night out, we’re going to showcase the top-ranked and bottom-ranked defense vs position for points and assists tonight.

The Washington Wizards are the worst team in the NBA defending centers and allow the most points to the five this season, allowing on average 29.11 points per game to centers.

Tonight, that means Derrick Lively has the best matchup on paper. His betting points line is 11.5, and he’s averaging 12.6 points per game this season. There are two other positions with the best points matchup tonight:

  • Brandon Miller, a small forward, gets the Knicks, who give up the most points to small forwards (25.98 points per game)

  • Shooting guard Devin Vassell gets the Chicago Bulls, who give up the most points to shooting guards (26.72)

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Sacramento is in Memphis tonight, and that means, on paper, Ja Morant is in for a tough defensive matchup.

No other team keeps point guards off the score sheet better than Sacramento. They’re holding point guards to an average of 20.44 points per game. The other players up against the best defenses tonight against their position:

  • Marcus Smart (point guard), is also against Sacramento.

  • Andrew Wiggins (small forward), is against Houston, who give up just 15.78 points per game to small forwards.

  • Josh Hart (shooting guard), is against Charlotte, who hold shooting guards to 18.96 points per game.

We aren’t saying this filter is the end-all-be-all, but it’s a good starting point for your research. Don’t rely on it solely, but rely on it in conjunction with other data.

The same filter can be used for assists. Oklahoma City gives up the most assists to centers in the NBA, so if you filter the dashboard today by DvP, Toronto Raptors center Jakob Poetl jumps to the top.

But you’ll notice it’s more than that on the dashboard for assists. Other DvP rankings are the best in the NBA:

  • Chicago give up the most assists to point guards, good on paper for Chris Paul and Stephon Castle of San Antonio.

  • Washington gives up the most assists to power forwards, the Mavericks starting center is PJ Washington, who averages 2.6 assists per game.

  • Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, shooting guards, have the best assists matchup in the league tonight against New Orleans.

And then of course, there’s the other end of the spectrum again. Tonight, there are two starters with the best matchup in the league.

  • Toronto gives up the least assists to PGs, and SGA is back home tonight to face them.

  • Fellow Canadian Andrew Wiggins gets the toughest assist matchup for small forwards, Houston.

There are two defense vs position rankings that jump off the dashboard tonight for Thursday Night Football:

  • 32nd ranked: the Lions vs Wide Receivers

  • 25th and 21st ranked: both teams passing yards vs quarterbacks

The Lions vs Wide Receivers

Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Christian Watson are the top three wide receivers in Green Bay, and all three get the best matchup in the league tonight.

But exercise caution on depending on this alone. There’s been no consistency from any of the Packers wideouts. For example, Jayden Reed is averaging 57.8 yards per game, has 3 games above 100 yards, and 6 games under 30 yards.

The Lions give up the 8th most passing yards to opposing quarterbacks, and the Packers give up the 12th most passing yards to opposing quarterbacks. In theory, there is going to be room in the air tonight.
