Those five pitchers are Bryce Miller, Jesus Luzardo, Logan Henderson, Reid Detmers, and Nathan Eovaldi - and they’ll be the focus of today’s newsletter. This is how we’ll break down the matchup grade:

Now, let’s get into it.

Miller comes into this game playing some of his best ball in recent memory, clearing his 5.5 strikeout line in six straight games, averaging 8.4 strikeouts per start in his last 5. He’s mixed in performances with 9, 11 and 8 K’s in that stretch.

Miller deals to the Miami Marlins, who rank 24th in strikeout rate against righties - not great for Miller - but 70% of opposing righties have cleared their K rate against the Marlins in their last 10 games, including three of the last four, who all managed 6 or more K’s.

Jesus Luzardo managed only four starts with 8 or more K’s in his first 13 starts this season. In the five starts since, he has 8 or more K’s four times while averaging 9 strikeouts per start.

Luzardo faces a Cincinnati Reds team that has held its own against lefties lately, with only 25% of opposing lefties clearing their strikeout line against Cincy in their last 10 games. Having said that, they still rank 9th in K rate vs lefties, with two players leading the charge: Noelvi Marte has a K rate of 41.4% against lefties, and Eugenio Suarez has a 36.4% K rate vs lefties.

So far in 2026, Logan Henderson has been very consistent. In his 5 starts, he has 5 or more strikeouts four times, averaging 6.0. Here’s the catch: he hasn’t made a start since May 22nd. He returns to the mound from a back injury, hoping to continue the strong success he found before he landed on the IL.

He’s looking for that success against the Cardinals, who rank 16th in strikeout rate against righties. They are far from the same pitcher, but this Cardinals team was just tuned up by righty Jacob Misiorowski, who struck out 11 St. Louis batters.

Will Detmers’ strikeout struggles on the road continue? At home this season, he’s averaging 7.2 K’s with a 56% hit rate against this line. On the road, those numbers drop substantially to 5.8 K’s and a 33% hit rate. In his last 7 road starts, he’s only cleared this line once.

But he does walk into a great matchup. The Texas Rangers rank 4th in strikeout rate against lefties, with a collective K rate of 25.2% as a team. Even better, this projected Rangers lineup has 48 plate appearances H2H versus Detmers, and they’ve swung their way to a 47.9% K rate.

Opposite of Detmers, the Rangers will counter with Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi has a 29% hit rate this season, but has he turned a page? He’s over in three straight games while averaging 9.0 K’s.

More importantly, Eovaldi has an elite, elite matchup. The LA Angels have the second-highest K rate against right-handed pitchers, with a collective K rate of 24.9%. In 74 plate appearances against Eovaldi, this lineup has a K rate of 18.9%. Of the five recent righties to face the Angels, four of them have 7 or more Ks, and one managed to surpass Eovaldi’s like, finishing with 8.
