Light NBA Schedule, Massive Olympic Game

We don’t have Olympic data at Props.Cash, but as the writer of the newsletter and a fan of all things sports, especially rivalries, we have to mention the women’s hockey game starting just after this newsletter hits your inbox at 2 PM—Canada vs the States. There’s nothing better. Hopefully you can tune in. When these two teams play, it’s one of the best things in sports. Hatred, passion, good hockey & first place in group A on the line.

After that, a small NBA schedule kicks off:

  • The Indiana Pacers at the New York Knicks

  • The LA Clippers at the Houston Rockets

  • The Dallas Mavericks at the Phoenix Suns

  • The San Antonio Spurs at the LA Lakers

And this is what we have for all four games: the top, or one of the top, three-point made trends for each game, and another prop that isn’t 3PTM.

Now, let’s get into it.

IND @ NYK

Jalen Brunson, 36.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists

The Indiana Pacers rank 26th in defending Brunson’s top scoring play type.

Brunson’s top play types, with the Pacers defensive ranking on the right

And when Brunson plays teams that rank in the bottom five in Pick’N’Roll Ball Handler defense, he averages 37.6 PRA, with a 78% hit rate against this line. Although the average isn’t overwhelmingly enticing, he had 30 PRA in one of those games, and in that game, he had fewer than 6 rebound chances. In all other games, he had 6 or more rebound chances. If we eliminate that one game, his PRA average jumps to 38.5 with an 88% hit rate.

He’s also playing good ball lately, averaging 40.3 PRA across the two games, with 40+ PRA in two of the three.

Andrew Nembhard, 1.5 3PTM

The New York Knicks rank 26th in 3-point defense against opposing point guards, and in games this season against other bottom 5 defensive teams for that metric, Nembhard eats. Across 8 games against those opponents, Nembhard is averaging 2.6 made threes with a 75% hit rate.

They also rank 23rd in 3-point attempts allowed, so the opportunities should be there. He’s averaging 5.2 attempts per game this season, and this is how Nembhard splits with different volumes:

  • Below-average game, 0-4 attempts (14 games): 1.1 made threes average, 36% hit rate against this line

  • Average game, 5-6 attempts (16 games): 1.8 made threes average, 50% hit rate against this line

  • Above average game, 7-8 attempts (8 games): 2.8 made threes average, 88% hit rate against this line

  • Crazy volume game, 9+ attempts (4 games): 3.0 made threes average, 100% hit rate against this line

LAC @ HOU

Amen Thompson, 6.5 Rebounds

Thompson’s rebounds prop has been one of the best bets this season, with a 70% hit rate. He hasn’t gone three games in a row this season without 7 rebounds since the first three games of the season.

And as you can see, he’s gone under this line in back-to-back games coming into this one.

He’s facing the Clippers, who rank 22nd in rebounds allowed to opposing point guards, with 67% of opposing point guards clearing their rebound line against the Clippers in their last 10 games.

In the two games Thompson has gone under, he has 8 or fewer rebound chances both times, even though he’s averaged 13 rebound chances per game this season. And when Thompson has 10 or more rebound chances this year, he’s averaging 8.3 boards with an 84% hit rate.

Let’s hope for 10 or more rebound chances in a matchup that looks good, especially since they traded Ivica Zubac. In the 3 games without Zubac, the Clippers have been outrebounded 49-48, 49-46 & 54-42.

Bennedict Mathurin, 1.5 3PTM

Admittedly, the data here is sketchy because Mathurin is making his Clippers debut after being traded from Indiana to LA. But there wasn’t a lot to love from this game, so we’re leaning on Mathurin’s road data this season.

He’s averaging 2.5 3PTM this season on the road, with an 82% hit rate. Let's hope he tries to make a good first impression with some volume, too. This is how Mathurin splits with different volumes, while averaging 5.6 attempts per game this season:

  • Below-average game, 0-4 attempts (10 games): 1.1 made threes average, 40% hit rate against this line

  • Average game, 5-6 attempts (8 games): 1.9 made threes average, 63% hit rate against this line

  • Above average game, 7-8 attempts (4 games): 2.5 made threes average, 100% hit rate against this line

  • Crazy volume game, 9+ attempts (6 games): 3.7 made threes average, 100% hit rate against this line

DAL @ PHX

Collin Gillespie, 3.5 Rebounds

The Mavs are the worst rebounding team in the NBA against opposing point guards. Gillespie gets the best matchup in the NBA. Can he capitalize? Against other bottom 5 rebounding teams, Gillespie is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game with a 67% hit rate.

And in all situations this season, Gillespie is averaging 4.1 rebounds per game with a 54% hit rate. Even more so, in his last 10 games, his hit rate has been 80%. He’s also coming off two days rest, and in his 6 games on two days rest this season, he’s averaging 5.7 rebounds with an 83% hit rate.

Collin Gillespie, 2.5 3PTM

Unlike his rebounds, this is a bad matchup. The Mavs rank 3rd best in 3-point defense against opposing point guards. But Gillespie is a volume fiend, averaging 7.2 made threes per game this season. And there are two reasons to hope we could see solid volume tonight - in games without Grayson Allen, his 3PTA average jumps to 8.3. And in his last 4 games, he has 10 or more 3’s each time. With that, let’s look at his volume:

  • Below-average game, 0-6 attempts (21 games): 1.9 made threes average, 29% hit rate against this line

  • Average game, 7-8 attempts (16 games): 3.3 made threes average, 81% hit rate against this line (SEE CHART)

  • Above average game, 9-11 attempts (12 games): 3.9 made threes average, 92% hit rate against this line

  • Crazy volume game, 12+ attempts (3 games): 6.7 made threes average, 100% hit rate against this line

Gillespie, keep shooting.

Devin Vassell, 1.5 3PTM

What we need from Vassell: an average 3-point attempt game. With that, we have a good feeling here. Here are the facts:

  1. Vassell, in all situations this season and in all games, he’s averaging 6.8 3PTA.

  2. The Lakers rank 29th in 3-point defense against opposing small forwards

  3. He has 13 games this season against defenses that rank in the bottom 5 of 3-point defense against opposing small forwards

  4. In those 13 games, he has a 62% hit rate with a 2.5 3-point made average.

  5. In those 13 games, he’s averaging 6.9 3PTA.

  6. But more importantly, in 8 of those 13 games, he has 6 or more three-point attempts.

  7. And in those 8 games, he’s averaging 3.3 made threes with an 88% hit rate.

Volume in a good matchup, that’s what we need for Vassell.

See you Thursday!
