Getting Set for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals

Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals had everything - hits, fights, goals, misery, joy, more fights, more hits, emotions, anger, more goals, even more hits, and even more fights. When the dust settled, the Panthers took a 2-1 series lead after a 6-1 smashing of the Oilers, which included 140 combined penalty minutes, 3 goalies, and a whole lot of chaos.

And now we get you set for game 4! We’re going to look at it from two angles: the Oilers in these playoffs after a loss and a micro-focus on McDavid after a loss, plus McDavid after being shut out of a game on the scoresheet 👀

Let’s get into it!

The Oilers have lost six games in the playoffs, with just two sets of back-to-back losses. They lost their first two games vs LA, and have lost games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals. In the 5 games after a loss they’ve played so far, they’re 3-2, outscoring opponents 15-10 (not including game 3 because they haven’t played the game after that loss yet). In those 5 games, the leading scorers for the Oilers are as follows:

  • 3rd highest: a tie between Leon Draisaitl, Evander Kane, and Connor Brown. They all have four points (Leon - 1 goal, 3 assists, Kane - 2 goals, 2 assists, Brown - 3 goals, 1 assist).

  • 2nd highest: Connor McDavid, with 5 points (1 goal, 4 assists)

  • The highest: Evan Bouchard, with 6 points! (2 goals, 4 assists)

Is it time to back Bouchard? He’s racked up a staggering 24 shots on goal in the first three games and has a goal and 4 assists so far.

Or Connor Brown? He doesn’t have a point in the series and has only managed 4 shots on goal (all in game 2). He did have three shot attempts in game 3, but none found their way to Bobrovsky or behind him.

And then there’s Leon of course, who didn’t have a shot on goal in game 3 for just the 3rd time these playoffs and didn’t have a single-shot attempt for the first time in the postseason. It feels like a ‘get right’ spot for him, especially with his numbers after a loss.

Or Evander Kane, who had 16 penalty minutes in game 3, and played under 14 minutes because of that. Even in limited minutes, he managed 8 shot attempts and 4 shots on goal. He played 22 & 24 minutes in the first two games, so after a break in game 3 because of his time spent in the penalty box, Kane could be due for a good game considering his numbers after a loss.

McDavid After A Loss

And then, McJesus. The best player on the planet has shown up after a loss when the Oilers need him most, with 5 points in 5 games. And when he says something like this, it can be scary:

He played 31 and 35 minutes in the first two games and has averaged 24 in the playoffs and 23 on the road. But because of the debacle that was game 3, he only played 20 minutes and managed just 2 shot attempts (with 2 shots on goal). Also, in the two games these playoffs where he had zero points, he bounced back with multi-point games both ties (3 in the first round, 2 points vs Dallas).
