Plus: Stanley Cup Playoff thoughts and MLB batter vs pitcher matchups...

In partnership with

Thursday, May 1st: NBA, NHL & MLB

In today’s newsletter: a storyline unfolding across two NBA series that ties them together. One key thought for each Stanley Cup Playoff game, as four teams aim to close out their series tonight. And in baseball, a graphic highlighting some intriguing batter vs. pitcher matchups that are worth watching.

Both NBA series tonight come with high stakes: the Knicks have a chance to eliminate the Pistons in Detroit, while the Nuggets can close out the Clippers in Los Angeles. But if either home team pushes back, we could be treated to a pair of Game 7s.

There’s also a compelling parallel between the big men in these matchups—especially the two stars on the road. Karl-Anthony Towns for the Knicks and Nikola Jokic for the Nuggets have each played their best basketball away from home in this series, and tonight they’ll be counted on to deliver again in hostile territory.

The key question: can the trend continue tonight? Both stars have been noticeably more effective on the road—scoring efficiently and putting up strong PRA numbers. With a chance to close out their series, the added stakes could be just the extra push they need to keep thriving away from home. Here are their road charts for both their points lines, and PRA lines.

TOR/OTT: William Nylander, 2.5 Shots on Goal

Nylander didn’t hit this line in game 4, registering just two shots on goal, but he had 6 the game before that and there’s reason to be optimistic that he can do it tonight. When he missed this line last game, he had 5 shot attempts, and this season with 5 or more shot attempts, he’s averaging 4 shots on goal per game.

Nylander with 5 or more shot attempts

Nylander has 15 shot attempts in his last two games, and the Leafs are desperate to close this out, so we’re hoping the shot attempts come, and the shots on goal follow.

VGK/MIN: Kirill Kaprizov, 3.5 Shots on Goal

Kaprizov has 8 shot attempts in 4 straight games and has gone over this 3.5 shots on goal line in three of those games. This season, with 8 or more shot attempts, he’s averaged 4.6 shots on goal and gone over this line 74% of the time.

Kaprizov with 8 or more shot attempts

Even with 7+ shot attempts, he’s still averaging 4.2 shots on goal, clipping this line 62% of the time.

DAL/COL: Cale Makar, Anytime Goal

The Avs backs are against the wall, Makar doesn’t have a goal in this series, and he’s already called himself out:

So far in the series, he’s fired 19 shots on goal and has attempted at least 9 shots in every game.

Makar’s shots on goal in the playoffs

This season, in games where he’s attempted 9 or more shots and put at least 3 on goal, he’s scored 12 goals in 10 of those games—including two multi-goal outings—across 30 total games that met those criteria.

LAK/EDM: Leon Draisaitl, 2.5 Shots on Goal

There’s blood in the water, and Draisaitl is a shark. The Oilers can close out the series tonight, and their best goalscorer at 2.5 shots on goal is a solid line. He’s averaging 3 shots on goal per game this series, and 3.5 shots on goal at home in the series.

Draisaitl shots on goal, with his shot attempts, in the playoffs

He’s averaging 6 shot attempts per game, too. This season with 6 or more shot attempts, he’s averaging 4.3 shots on goal and has cleared this line 83% of the time.
