Rebounding in the NBA

Potentially the best rebounding matchup for each of the 6 games tonight...

In partnership with

Grabbing Boards Tonight

The newsletter hasn’t highlighted rebounding in a slate of games in a long time, and with a 6 game slate tonight, it felt like the perfect moment to fixate on the glass. We found one player from each game that met the following rebounding criteria:

  • In a good positional matchup, the team they’re playing allows or restricts rebounds to their position well.

  • Solid data in at least two metrics (recently, home/away, with rest, with players or without players, etc.)

The lucky 6 players highlighted are Orlando’s Cole Anthony, Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Brooklyn’s Nicolas Claxton, Indiana’s Andrew Nembhard, Houston’s Alperen Sengun, and the Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns.

Anthony has averaged just 3 rebounds per game this season, but he’s averaged 4.85 rebounds over his last 7 games, clearing this line in 5 of those games.

Anthony’s Last 10 games

He gets a decent matchup against the Bulls, who allow 6.47 rebounds per game to point guards, with 67% of point guards clearing their rebounds line in Chicago’s last 10 games.

And in his last 5 road games, Anthony is averaging 4.2 rebounds per game, clearing this line 60% of the time.

Jayson Tatum, 8.5 Rebounds

Tatum is averaging 8.8 rebounds per game this season, but that average jumps to a staggering 9.5 at home.

And his matchup data is two-prong - the 76ers allow 10.97 rebounds per game to power forwards, 5th most in the NBA. That’s the first prong. The other prong is that he’s got great historical data against Philly, going over this 8.5 rebound line in 16 of his last 22 against them averaging over 10 boards per game.

Tatum against Philly

Recent power forwards have dominated Philly, with the position clearing their rebounds line at a 61% rate in their last ten games (including Tatum on February 20th).

Nicolas Claxton, 7.5 Rebounds

Claxton made it into the newsletter because of the Warriors’ lack of presence in the pain, and their consistency in giving up rebounds to centers. Golden State ranks 28th in opposing rebounding to centers, allowing 16.82 rebounds per game to the position. 57% of opposing centers have cleared their rebounding line against the Warriors in their last 10 games.

Claxton has only cleared this line in 45% of his games, averaging 7.4 this season. And at home, that drops to 44%. But recently at home, he’s been better. In his last 5 games in Brooklyn, he’s averaged 7.8 rebounds and cleared this line in 3 of the last 5.

Andrew Nembhard is averaging 3.2 rebounds per game this season, going under this line in 61% of his games this season. That doesn’t change much on the road, where he averages 3.4 rebounds and his under-rate doesn't change at 61%.

Nembhard on the road this season

He went over this number in his last game, with 6 rebounds, and hasn’t gone over in back-to-back games since January 23rd and 25th. And lastly, Nembhard gets the Hawks tonight, who allow 6.13 rebounds per game to shooting guards, but that’s heavily influenced by a couple of guards: Desmond Bane had 10 recently, Malik Beasley had 7 and Tyler Herro had 6. Plenty of other shooting guards have been held off the glass recently, as seen below.

This is a weird one - on one side, Sengun gets the best matchup in the league. The Pelicans allow the most rebounds to centers, averaging 17.37 per game. But on the other hand, Sengun has 11 or more in just 25 of 58 games this season (43%).

Sengun this season

If you’re playing this, you’re banking on Sengun finding a rhythm against the worst rebounding team in the NBA. And his recent data is more encouraging, averaging 10.3 rebounds in his last 10 games while going over this line in 6 of his last 7 games.

Sengun’s Last 10 Games

He did have 13 against the Pels earlier this season, too. Another encouraging sign.

Admittedly, his head-to-head data against the Lakers is awful, but Anthony Davis isn’t there anymore.

KAT H2H against the Lakers

Jaxson Hayes is now his biggest competition down low, and lately, Hayes has been losing the battle to marquee centers. Ivica Zubac had games of 10 and 16 rebounds against him this week, Naz Reid grabbed 12 boards against the Lakers, and Nikola Jokic had 13 on the 22nd. Yes, Hayes is shutting out mid-to-low-level centers (Yves Missi, Kessler Edwards, DeAndre Jordan), but when he goes up against one of the big boys, he loses.

And KAT has great data on the road. At home, he averages 12.8 rebounds and has gone over this line in 50% of games. On the road, he averages 14 rebounds and has gone over this line in 71% of his games.
