Scary Thought: We Have To Watch The Jets On Primetime Again

As trick-or-treating wraps up, the New York Jets will kick off week 9 at 2-6. Not the year many had predicted. They’ve added DeVante Adams to try to right the ship, but it has been to no avail so far. They face Houston tonight, and there are three trends about these two teams that we can highlight to find some value for Thursday Night Football.

Rodgers, the Endzone, and the Texans’ Defense

Aaron Rodgers can still find the end zone. His 12 passing touchdowns rank him 9th in the league. But over his last 4 games, he has 7 passing touchdowns, compared to 5 in his first 4 games.

And Houston ranks second last in passing touchdowns allowed, allowing 2.14 per game this season. 5 of the 8 quarterbacks they’ve played have thrown 2 or more passing touchdowns.

Davante Who? Garrett Wilson Reigns Supreme

Garrett Wilson is a baller. He’s averaging 95.5 yards and 7.75 receptions per game over his last 4 games. If you’re interested in a more in-depth breakdown of Wilson tonight, check out our NFL Best Bets on YouTube for Week 9.

Historically, at least one Jets wide receiver is likely to have success against this Texans secondary, too. Josh Downs, Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, Brian Thomas, Justin Jefferson, and Alec Pierce have all had 80 or more yards against the Jets this season.

There have only been two opponents the Texans have faced (Chicago in week 2 and Buffalo in week 5), who have not had a wide receiver go for 80 yards.

No Diggs, No Collins, Mix-on The Ground?

Stefon Diggs is out for the season.

Nico Collins is out for a while.

Tank Dell is WR1 but he has Sauce Gardiner to deal with.

Joe Mixon, you’re up. Mixon has 50 (!) rushing attempts over his last two games. In the two games this season where he has 20 or fewer attempts, he was injured in one of the games and he was returning from injury in the other.

Mixon’s rushing attempts this season

Over the last three weeks, there’s data to suggest that teams are going run heavy against New York. Rhomandre Stevenson, Najee Harris, and Ray Davis all had 20 or more attempts against the Jets in the last three weeks.

It’s a small slate in the NBA, with only 4 games.

  • Milwaukee vs Memphis

  • Houston vs Dallas

  • San Antonio vs Utah

  • Phoenix vs the LA Clippers

Here’s one thought about each game 10 days into the season.

Milwaukee/Memphis: Memphis Can’t Rebound

Steven Adams is in Houston, and rookie Zach Edey is starting for the Grizzlies. And it shows. Memphis is 29th in rebounding, averaging just 45.6 per game. Offensive rebounding isn’t bad, ranked 16th averaging 10.7 per game. But defensive rebounding is quite awful, where they’re ranked 29th.

Houston/Dallas: Alperen Sengun Is A Beast On The Glass

Sengun averaged 9.3 rebounds per game last year, and through the first four games of the season, he’s managed to tick that up to 12.5 boards per game. He only has one game under 12 rebounds, and that was on the road against Victor Wembanyama.

Sengun’s rebounds and rebound chances this season

His opponent, the Mavs, ranks 24th in rebounding this season.

San Antonio/Utah: Chris Paul Can Still Dish It

Through 4 games, Paul has gone over his 7.5 assists line three times and is averaging 7.3 assists per game compared to his 6.7 assists per game last season. And this is without a true shooter on the Spurs, and with Wemby shooting just 25% from three and 25% from the floor.

Chris Paul’s assists and potential assists this season

The Jazz, his opponent tonight, has allowed the second-most assists in the NBA per game so far.

Phoenix/LA Clippers: Give Normal Powell Minutes

Normal Powell is averaging 34 minutes and 18.5 field goals per game right now with Paul George in Philly and Kawhi in no man’s land. Last season when he averaged those numbers, Powell scored 20 points per game. This season with 34 minutes and nearly 19 shots per game? A whopping 26 points per game. Powell has developed into the perfect number two option for the Clippers in the early going.
